Level of Armenian Sevan increases faster than planned - Vice-Premier

10.06.2010, 19:23
The level of the Armenian Lake Sevan has been rising faster than expected in the past two years, said Vice-Premier, Minister of Territorial Administration Armen Gevorgyan.
YEREVAN, June 10. / ARKA /. The level of the Armenian Lake Sevan has been rising faster than expected in the past two years, said Vice-Premier, Minister of Territorial Administration Armen Gevorgyan.

"Over the past two years, and especially this year, the lake level has been rising particularly rapidly. This creates additional problems ... But it is difficult to come to an agreement with the nature, and therefore we do everything in our power to protect the territories," said Gevorgyan on Wednesday during government hour in the Armenian parliament.

The level of the Armenian Lake Sevan has now reached 1899.91 meters, which is 66 cm more than last year.

In 2009, the lake level has risen by 38 cm, and within the last eight years, the lake level has risen by 291 cm

According to the vice-premier, the additional problem of the increasing level of the lake is due to the flooding of coastal areas of Sevan National Park, nearby buildings, road and water routs.

Gevorgyan said that the process is conducted periodically to monitor the situation and inventory around the areas at risk of flooding.

The minister recalled that it has been two years since a specially created inter-ministerial commission is dealing with the problems of Lake Sevan.

Lake Sevan is one of the largest alpine lakes in Europe and Asia.

It is located in the heart of the Armenian highlands, at an altitude of 1914 meters.

At length, from north-west to south-east, the lake stretches over to 70 kilometers, and its water surface area reaches almost 1500 square kilometers.

The area of the lake is 1240 square kilometers and the depth is at 83 meters.

Twenty-eight rivers fall into Sevan Lake, but only the Razdan River (Arax) is flowing out.

Lake water is the main drinking water resources in the region.--0--
