YEREVAN, March 16. /ARKA/. Russian federal cosmic agency “Roskosmos” and Byurakan astrophysics observatory of the Armenian Academy of Sciences will sign memorandum on cooperation according to which the Russian side will provide 4 million EURO for modernization of the observatory, said the director of observatory Hayk Harutyunyan.

“Cooperation refers to the study of circumterrestrial space, particularly so-called cosmic garbage. This direction is not our profile but we need investments for modernization of the observatory”, he said.

He said that repair is needed particularly for the largest telescope of Byurakan observatory in the region. “Modernization is related to large financial means which we don’t have now. We should seek external sources of funding”, said Harutyunyan.

The visit of representatives of Roskosmos in Yerevan is expected at he beginning of the next week and at that time the amount of investment will be defined.

Byurakan astrophysics observatory was established in 1946 on the mountain Aragats on the height of 1400 meters. From 1998 the observatory bears the name of famous scientist-astrophysicist, academician Viktor Hambardzumyan.

The observatory studies transitional phenomena in cosmic objects – stars and galaxies which show explosion processes. It helps to find directions of creation of stars. --0—
