Armenian MP proposes to increase fee for renouncing citizenship several times

YEREVAN, January 20. /ARKA/. The National Assembly of Armenia discussed a draft of legislative amendments to the citizenship application procedure. In particular, the amendments foresee the complete digitalization of both the citizenship application process and the process for renouncing it.
At the same time, the state fee will be revised. Currently, the fee for applying for citizenship is 1,000 drams, but the amendments propose increasing this fee to 50,000 drams, while the fee for renouncing citizenship will rise from 25,000 drams to 150,000 drams, respectively.
Independent MP Gegham Nazaryan stated that many citizens "commit a sin" by renouncing citizenship solely to avoid having their sons drafted for military service. In this regard, he proposed radical measures: for citizens over the age of 27, the fee for renouncing citizenship should be set at 1.5 million drams, and for those under 27, at 15 million drams. (1 USD = 398.94 drams).
