Armenia to change rules for conscription in case of illness

YEREVAN, December 19. /ARKA/. At a meeting on Thursday, the Armenian government adopted a draft amendment to the methodology for assessing health status when conscripting individuals for military service.

In particular, the draft stipulates that if certain diseases are present and no deterioration in health is recorded after the deferment period ends, the individual will be recognized as partially fit for service and called up for military service, taking into account health-related restrictions.

Defense Minister Suren Papikyan also mentioned that many diseases can often be treated through necessary procedures. However, citizens often show no interest in undergoing treatment, preferring to avoid military service instead.

He noted that today's decision will close this loophole. The government will also take responsibility for treating the individual so they can continue their service in the future.

Additionally, the minister pointed out that due to age, many officers face gallbladder issues, but they either avoid surgery or are forced to stop their military service because such conditions prohibit service. The new amendments allow for limited service under these circumstances.
