Armenia intends to suspend issuance of biometric passports
YEREVAN, December 6. /ARKA/. By a vote of 65 to 5 and 22 abstentions the Armenian parliament approved today in the first reading a set of amendments and additions to the law on Armenian Citizen's Passport and a number of related laws.
Deputy Chief of Police Ara Fidanyan said the amendments are required for issuing biometric passports and electronic IDs and signatures as well as for the gradual replacement of old passports and electronic IDs.
According to the amendments, issuance of biometric passports to Armenian citizens will be suspended until January 1, 2024 until creation of biometric passports with new generation technology and security features and gradual substitution of old passports.
The amendments will extend the term of issuing blue passports until 31 December 2023, and ID cards will be provided without electronic storage until the government approves their new features.
ID cards with electronic storage will be provided until 15 February 2023, and after that the cards will be without storage. -0-
