Armenia’s population continues to dwindle

As of April 1, 2016 Armenia had 2,994,400 people of permanent population, by 12,300 people (0.4%) less from the year before, the National Statistical Service (NSS) said.

YEREVAN, April 29. /ARKA/. As of April 1, 2016 Armenia had 2,994,400 people of permanent population, by 12,300 people (0.4%) less from the year before, the National Statistical Service (NSS) said. 

From the beginning of the year the population decreased by 4,200 people. NSS said the negative migration balance was 5,700 people, while the natural growth was 1,500 people. 

According to the National Statistical Service, the urban population as of April 1, when compared to the same period in 2015, decreased by 6,400 people to 1,907,400 people. In the capital city Yerevan the population grew by 1,900 people. In rural areas, the population decreased by 5,900 people to 1,089,700 people.

Officially Armenia’s permanent population as of January 1, 2016 was less than 3 million, for the first time since 1970s, standing at 2.998.6 million.  In 1977 the Soviet Armenia had a population of 2.9 million. In 1978 it was already above 3 million, growing to 3.6 million in late 1992

According to the National Statistical Service, the number of children born in the country in January-March 2016 decreased by 2.4% when compared to the same period of 2015, to 9,171. -0-
