YEREVAN, November 9. /ARKA/. A series of measures designed to teach people the proper use of antibiotics will be held in Armenia on November 12-16 as part of an international week of proper use of antibiotics, Deputy Health Minister Lena Nanushyan said at a press conference.

She said antibiotics save lives but any time antibiotics are used, they can cause side effects and lead to antibiotic resistance.  She said antibiotic resistance is one of the most urgent threats to the public’s health. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them

"If appropriate measures are not taken, by 2050 more than 10 million people could die from viruses that will become resistant, causing damage of $ 00 trillion," said Nanushyan.

She noted that according to the latest WHO studies, compliance with sanitary and hygienic standards, work to prevent diseases and the use of antibiotics only in emergency cases reduced the mortality rate from diseases almost twice in two years.

WHO Representative in Armenia Gayane Ghukasyan said in her turn  that the  effort is to help improve antibiotic prescribing and use and  help combat antibiotic resistance.

In her words, in a number of European countries, measures have already been taken to curb the misuse of antibiotics in agriculture as well. According to international studies, about 50% of all antibiotics are used in this area.

‘Our goal is to use antibiotics to save lives,” she said, adding  that in 30 years the use of antibiotics in agriculture has increased 30 times, and only 10 times in medicine.

"We will consult with both farmers, enterprises and individuals to explain the harm of using antibiotics in agriculture, as their misuse becomes dangerous for the people," she said. -0-
