Armenia’s Public Council to have National Minorities Chamber

Under a bill On Public Council, adopted by Armenia’s National Assembly today in the second and final reading by 64 votes against 32, the Public Council will have National Minorities Chamber.
YEREVAN, March 6. /ARKA/. Under a bill On Public Council, adopted by Armenia’s National Assembly today in the second and final reading by 64 votes against 32, the Public Council will have National Minorities Chamber.
"The purpose of the National Minorities Chamber will be to monitor the implementation of the rights of persons belonging to national minorities. It will also submit proposals on legislative initiatives related to the activities of national minorities," Artur Hovhannisyan, First Deputy Minister of Justice, said.
He also added that the Chamber will exchange relating information with the Office of the Ombudsman and local authorities.
Hovhannisyan also noted that, according to the bill, the Public Council will have 45 members, up from the current 36 members and will get funding from the state budget. The Council will have 15 commissions.
The Public Council is an advisory body and was established in 2008 to strengthen political consensus and peace, as well as encourage the formation of civil society. -0-
