Armenian drivers' penalty points increased from 9 to 13

YEREVAN, March 5. /ARKA/. The National Assembly of Armenia approved, in the first reading, a bill initiated by NA Speaker Alen Simonyan to amend the system of violations for drivers. The bill proposes increasing the number of points awarded to drivers at the beginning of the year from 9 to 13.

The amendments also propose expanding the list of violations for which points will be deducted from drivers. Specifically, 0.5 points will be deducted for parking in the second row. For actions that are deemed socially dangerous, such as running a red light, driving into oncoming traffic, or using a phone while driving, the number of points deducted will be increased depending on the violation.

It is expected that the bill will come into force on May 1, 2025.

Additionally, changes have been made to the bill. Initially, it was assumed that the deducted points would be reset to zero on that date. For example, if a driver currently has 2 points out of 9, they would have 13 points starting from May 1. However, the adopted version of the bill states that drivers will simply receive an additional 4 points.

Drivers who have already exhausted their points before the bill comes into effect will not receive new points and will have to go through the procedure for restoring their driving rights, as before.
