Armenian Health Ministry reports increase in coronavirus morbidity rate

YEREVAN, September 6. /ARKA/. Covid cases are rising in Armenia, Romella Abovyan, head of a department at the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said on Tuesday

She said 68 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in the last 14 days, which is 31 cases more than in the previous 2 weeks.

She said the bulk of cases are a new sub strain of the Omicron virus, which affects more people, but the clinical course of the disease is almost identical to Omicron.

"It should be noted that cases of infection with this sub strain are recorded mostly as mild, thanks to so-called herd immunity. However, the disease may be more severe in people from the risk groups," she warned.

Abovyan emphasized that the increase in registered cases of coronavirus may be explained by early diagnosis of the disease: in Armenia, all patients with symptoms of acute respiratory diseases must be tested for COVID-19. She also did not rule out the possibility of an increase in the incidence of the disease due to weather conditions.

"Epidemiologic monitoring and studies are constantly conducted to determine the trends of morbidity in order to take timely measures. At the moment we do not have a sharp intensification of morbidity," she said.

The expert noted that vaccination against coronavirus is being carried out in polyclinics Vaccination against influenza will also start soon.

According to WHO, the incidence of coronavirus in the world has increased by 63% - 1.4 million cases of infection were recorded in 104 countries from July 17 to August 13. At the same time, mortality during this period decreased by 56%. South Korea, Australia, Singapore, Italy and the UK had the highest number of cases in four weeks. -0-
