YEREVAN, June 10. /ARKA/. Armenia's Ministry of Environment spent last year some 346.3 million drams on restoration of 810 hectares of forests, Acting Environment Minister Vahe Jilavyan said on Wednesday at the National Assembly.
He said that was the first government-financed forest restoration project, which also allowed creating  nurseries in an area of 7.4 hectares and also 1000 seasonal jobs.

According to Jilavyan, 9 forest projects estimated to cost 1.796 billion drams were to be implemented in 2019, however, they were carried out only partially. He said also that the ministry's employees had prevented 15,000 illegal deforestation attempts, by 6 times more than in 2018.

“The Police, the National Security Service and the Ministry of Emergency Situations were involved in this process, which increased the efficiency of the work,” he said.

Jilavyan also said that 6 million drams were allocated to the Yerevan Forestry to prepare design estimates for the installment of drip irrigation system on 45 hectares of a forest area in Nork-Marash community.

“According to preliminary estimates, the implementation of a drip irrigation system will require about 120 million drams,” he said.

Armenia has a territorial area of 29,743 square kilometres. According to the Cadastre Committee, as of July 2018, some 334,000 hectares were classified as forest lands, of which 86.6% were covered by forests. ($1 - 481.23 dram) -0-
