YEREVAN, May 30 /ARKA/. Armenia’s National Assembly was considering today four candidates for the position of members of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC).
Parliament Speaker Ararat Mirzoyan said the candidates were nominated by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. One of the candidates is Mesrop Mesropyan, an engineer from Redinet company. Other candidates are Seda Shahinyan, Sergey Aghinyan and Kamo Sargsyan. The first two hold positions at PSRC. Kamo Sargsyan is the acting head of the Water Committee.
During a discussion lawmakers pointed out the need to increase government control over the quality and pricing of public services. Mikael Melkumyan from the Prosperous Armenia faction drew attention to the need to revise gas prices. He said a parliamentary ad hoc commission set up last year to look into how public services are provided found a great deal of reserve opportunities allowing to reduce electricity prices. ‘I hope that PSRC will seriously deal with this issue,” he said.
Shahinyan said in turn that at this stage no requests for revising the natural gas price was submitted to PSRC, however, negotiations are underway with Gazprom-Armenia national distribution company.
She said as for the water price, the tariff proposed by Veolia Jur water distributor and sewerage operator needs to be updated every year. The next revision of the tariff is expected on August 1, she said.
Currently, Armenian households pay 44.98 drams per 1 kWh for daytime consumption and 35 drams for night time consumption. Socially unsecured families pay 40 and 30 drams respectively.
Armenia’s national power distribution company Electric Networks of Armenia is owned and run by Tashir Group of Companies, owned by a Russia-based billionaire of Armenian origin Samvel Karapetyan, who acquired the facility from the Russian energy holding Inter RAO UES in September 2015.
