YEREVAN, December 11. /ARKA/. By a vote of 82 to 19, Armenia's National Assembly adopted December 10 in the first reading a set of amendments to the law on operational investigation, which would permit the police to wiretap citizens’ telephone conversations.
MP Armen Khachatryan, a co-author of the amendments, said the changes permit the police to own wiretapping equipment. Currently, this right is vested in the National Security Service only.
"Telephone wiretapping is a multicomponent measure, which includes control over a fixed telephone network, mobile communications and Internet connection," the deputy said.
In particular, he said, the point in question is determining the whereabouts of a person through an Internet connection when a crime is being investigated.
Khachatryan said at present the police are forced to seek help from the National Security Service to carry out urgent investigative measures.
“Taking into account the fact that the police have an operational technical group with access to information labeled “secret” and special equipment, the proposed amendments would permit the police to independently wiretap telephone conversations,” the deputy said. -- 0-
