YEREVAN, December 16. /ARKA/. Armenian school students' achievements in mathematics and natural sciences have improved, Arsen Baghdasaryan, the national coordinator of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), said today.
He said TIMSS studies are carried out every 4 years. Armenia was first included in it in 2013. According to the TIMSS 2019 report, Armenia's position has improved.
According to Baghdasaryan, the study involved students in grades 4-8, and this time 150 schools from all over Armenia took part in the monitoring.
He said the study has found that the knowledge of Armenian students has increased both in mathematics and natural sciences. Moreover, today the average score shown by 4th grade pupils in math problems is almost the same as the international average, according to Baghdasaryan.
At a videoconference discussion with representatives of the Armenian Ministry of Education on Wednesday, Sylvie Bossoutrot, Country Manager of the World Bank for Armenia, congratulated Armenia for moving up by 42 notches in TIMSS latest 2019 report.
The TIMSS study allows participating countries to assess the current state of the national education system, compare progress with other countries, understand the general direction and identify problems.
Led by Singapore, five East Asian countries also including Chinese Taipei, Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong, continue to outperform all TIMSS countries in mathematics by a substantial margin at the fourth and eighth grades, according to results released from TIMSS. - 0--
