YEREVAN, November 20. /ARKA/. The one-time childbirth benefit for the first and second child in Armenia will be set at 500,000 drams beginning September 1, 2026, according to Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Arsen Torosyan.

"The one-time childbirth benefit is currently determined by the order of the child's birth within the family, which results in varying amounts of support: 300,000 drams for the first and second child, 1 million drams for the third and fourth, and 1.5 million drams for the fifth and any subsequent children," he stated during a government meeting on Thursday.

According to Torosyan, the suggested unification of the benefit is founded on the rationale that family expenses do not depend on the order of a child's birth and are consistent for all children.

He elaborated that the childbirth allowance frequently does not achieve its intended purpose. There are instances, particularly with the birth of a fifth or later child, where families have a child primarily for the financial benefit and subsequently face challenges in raising and supporting them.

"We propose to establish a uniform amount of 500,000 drams, which will represent an increase for the first and second child," Torosyan remarked.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that the allowance for the birth of a first child will be raised by 200,000 drams, for a second child by 200,000 drams, and for third and subsequent children, the monthly payment will be 50,000 drams in addition to a one-time payment of 500,000 drams.

"In essence, we are increasing the allowance for everyone," he stated. ($1 = 381.47 drams).-0-
