Corruption scheme found in Armenia’s customs service

Armenia’s National Security Service has detected cases of bribery and abuse of office powers in the Customs Service of the State Revenue Committee.
YEREVAN, July 27. /ARKA/. Armenia’s National Security Service has detected cases of bribery and abuse of office powers in the Customs Service of the State Revenue Committee.
In particular, in 2019 and 2020, customs officers in exchange for large bribes allowed the import of right-hand drive vehicles, despite the fact that this is prohibited by law. So, during the customs examination, the customs officers, knowing well that the wheel is located on the right side of the vehicle, abusing their powers, indicated in the documents that the steering wheel of the car was on the left, allowing these cars to be imported into the country.
In the Investigative Department of the National Security Service, a criminal case was initiated on the facts of abuse of office powers, taking a bribe, complicity in taking a bribe, giving a bribe and official forgery.
Criminal procedural and operational-search activities are being carried out to find out other officials and citizens involved in the corruption scheme.
A suspect or accused of an alleged crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court decision that has entered into legal force, in accordance with the procedure established by the Armenian Criminal Procedure Code. -0-
