Deputy Minister says level of knowledge of school students alarming
YEREVAN, January 25. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan unveiled today alarming data regarding the level of knowledge of school students while speaking at a public debate on the law on general education.
She cited several studies conducted in 2003 – 2015 which showed that 16%-28% of students failed to pass the minimum threshold of the international math assessment, lacking basic knowledge of integers and fractions and being unable to perform simple arithmetic operations.
Andreasyan noted also that 8%-11% of students got such low scores that it was impossible to assess them. In the same years, she said, 24% to 42% of students failed to pass the minimum threshold for an international grade in the science subject.
"In 2019, about 20% of applicants to universities did not pass the minimum threshold of the Armenian language exam. Only 54.6% of 9th grade students passed the minimum threshold for the 2017-2018 Armenian language and literature graduation exams. The figures indicate poor knowledge or ignorance of the language," she reported.
On November 25, 2021, the Armenian government approved a bill to amend the law on general education, designed to improve general education management. The bill requires teacher certification and offers a set of incentives. -0-
