YEREVAN, June 8. /ARKA/. The Armenian government is still considering a proposal to abolish mandatory military service deferment, awarded to male students majoring at state-run universities free of charge, Davit Harutyunyan, the chief of government staff, told a parliamentary Q&A session today.
The proposal was made last year by opposition MPs Ruben Hakobyan and Tevan Poghosyan. Under their bill, all male students who reach conscription age (18 in Armenia) must be called up to the armed forces.
"This draft law was submitted to the government’s consideration and was then sent for elaboration to the ministry of education and science, which has already completed it. The bill will be considered again by the government next week,' Harutyunyan said.
The issue came into the limelight following the massive offensive by Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh in early April.
Under current law, the military service deferment is given to male students of state-run universities who reach conscription age and who do not pay their tuition fees. This privilege is also granted to those students who are studying outside Armenia under intergovernmental agreements. -- 0-
