YEREVAN, August 2. /ARKA/. The Armenian government has approved today an agreement with the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB), whereby the bank will provide Armenia with $1 million grant to finance a program designed to modernize the system for prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in the primary health care sector.
The Minister of Health Arsen Torosyan specified that the grant will come from the Eurasian Stabilization and Development Fund of the EDB. He said the Armenian program was selected by the Eurasian Development Bank as part of a competition for financing health programs in EDB-member countries.
The minister said the grant will be used to carry out the screening of women in Lori, Tavush and Syunik provinces for detection of breast cancer. It will embrace at least 50% of women aged 50 to 69.
The minister said within the framework of the program, a mobile mammogram will be acquired to conduct further studies throughout Armenia and implement medical educational programs.
According to the Ministry of Health, breast cancer in Armenia ranks first in the number of other types of cancers. In recent years, the country has seen an increase in the incidence of breast cancer. Screening programs are expected to help detect the disease at an early stage and prevent its spread. --0-
