Eleven people die in Armenia after drinking counterfeit alcohol

Armenia's Ministry of Health said today that 23 cases of alcohol poisoning were reported in a time span from August 31 to September 1, including 11 fatalities.
YEREVAN, September 1. /ARKA/. Armenia's Ministry of Health said today that 23 cases of alcohol poisoning were reported in a time span from August 31 to September 1, including 11 fatalities.
Seventeen of these cases (of which 8 were fatal) were registered in the Armavir region. All the victims died after drinking bootleg alcohol.
The remaining 6 cases were recorded in Yerevan, including three fatalities. All were said to have drunk medical alcohol.
Three patients are in a critical condition with two of them being connected to a ventilator, three are in a serious condition, two are in a moderate condition and two people are so far without clinical symptoms. Another person refused medical assistance and was discharged from the Armenia medical center.
Work is underway to clarify the circle of persons who have consumed bootleg alcohol, the investigators said. Law enforcement authorities have detained Ashot Hovsepyan, a resident of the town of Armavir, born in 1970, on suspicion of producing and selling counterfeit alcohol. Work is underway to find another 30 liters of alcohol purchased by citizens. -0-
