YEREVAN, September 13. /ARKA/. The Fortress of Van in the eastern same-name province in Turkey was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. UNESCO Turkish National Commission President Prof. Ocal Oguz was quoted by ermenihaber.am as saying that the decision was taken by the UN agency in April.

Van Fortress is a historic massive stone fortification built during the 9th to 7th centuries BC, and is the largest example of its kind.

Earlier this year UNESCO included one of Armenia’s capital cities- Ani- on its World Heritage List.

Ani flourished in the 10th and 11th centuries, when it became the capital of the medieval Armenian Kingdom of the Bagratides and profited from control of one branch of the Silk Road. It began to decline due to the Mongol invasion and the devastating earthquake of 1319.-0-
