YEREVAN, May 31 /ARKA/. The Board of Trustees of Yerevan State University (YSU) on Thursday elected former deputy rector for Science Policy and International Cooperation Gegham Gevorkyan as acting rector. Gevorkyan is Professor at the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Theory and is an Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.
The post of rector became vacant after previous rector Aram Simonyan resigned on May 23. On February 28, 2019, the university’s Board of Trustees failed to include the issue of resignation of the rector on the meeting’s agenda with only 12 members of the board voting for, while 13 voted against it.
Last December, the State Oversight Service (SOS), a government body subordinate to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and the Police alleged that the YSU administration was involved in serious financial irregularities and other corrupt practices. They asked another law-enforcement body to launch an investigation.
Simonyan ran Armenia’s oldest and largest university since 2006. He denied the allegations saying he would not step down before 2020 when his term in office ends. -0-
