Government steps up road safety in rural communities

YEREVAN, April 19. /ARKA/. By a vote of 78 to 1 and 17 abstentions the parliament of Armenia has passed today in the second and final reading a set of changes to the law on local self-government.

The author of the changes, MP Vagarshak Hakobyan, said the situation with road signs in the country's rural communities is disappointing: in some communities there are no road signs at all. According to him, this is a consequence of legislative gaps.

According to the changes, the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure is the government body responsible for organizing the traffic in rural communities.

The head of the community, in accordance with the established procedures and after agreement with the relevant authorities, submits for the approval of the Council of Community Elders a scheme for organizing road traffic in the community. The traffic safety scheme is coordinated with the Road Police. - 0--
