Minister: Sanitary, hygiene situation under control in flood-stricken areas

YEREVAN, June 6. /ARKA/. The sanitary and hygiene situation is under control in the flood-stricken areas of northeastern Armenia, the country’s Healthcare Minister Anahit Avanesyan reported on Thursday.

“The situation is under control, we keep monitoring it. We check up on the water quality every now and then, and it remains normal. So, continue working as usual,” Avanesyan said at a briefing.

The Minister also reported that she had visited hospitals in the towns of Alaverdi and Noyemberyan, as well as in other settlements that were damaged by the flood.

“Our country’s healthcare system is prepared to combat infectious diseases. There is always a hypothetical risk of an outbreak, but we’re doing our best to prevent this from happening,” she stressed.

Heavy rains flooded Armenia’s northeastern provinces Lori and Tavush on 25 and 26 May, causing the Debed, Aghstev, and Tashir rivers to overflow their banks. As a result, portions of the railway and the freeway connecting Armenia with Georgia were destroyed. So far, the death toll stands at 4, and 443 individuals have been evacuated from the flooded area. A total of 300 million drams has been allocated for recovery efforts.
