YEREVAN, April 10. /ARKA/. In 2024, a total of 4,314 road accidents were registered in Armenia, resulting in 333 deaths, Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Committee on Defense and Security Armen Khachatryan said during a hearing on road safety.

According to the data he provided, 6,116 people were injured in road accidents last year.

Khachatryan also reported that in just the first three months of 2025, 988 road accidents were recorded, resulting in 60 deaths and 1,391 injuries.

“We can say that over the past 10 years, during peacetime, in a country with a population of 3 million, more than 3,600 people have died in road accidents, and approximately 70,000 have been injured. It’s also important to note that around 2,000 to 3,000 of the injured have been left with disabilities,” Khachatryan said.

He noted that the establishment of the Patrol Service marked an important institutional change in the field of road safety. It has had a significant impact not only on traffic control but also on crime prevention and investigation.

According to him, in recent years, the state has implemented substantial reforms in the process of obtaining a driver's license. “The process has become significantly more demanding. Requirements for both theoretical and practical exams have been tightened, oversight has been strengthened, and corruption risks in the system have been significantly reduced,” Khachatryan stated.

The deputy emphasized that the sector requires unified management, which necessitates the creation of a proper legal framework and the adoption of a national road safety strategy. This strategy would ensure the implementation of a unified and comprehensive state policy in the sector.
