YEREVAN, September 11. /ARKA/. A new specially protected area will be created in Armenia, the nature protection ministry reported today, saying that the idea comes from the National Academy of Sciences, which several years had asked then prime minister to consider creation of a dendrological park on the territory of the Byurakan Observatory.

The ministry said acting on an instruction of then prime minister, the ministry had set up a working group, however, because of some reasons, nothing was done to that end.

The current nature protection minister Artsvik Minasyan ordered the creation of a new working group to address this issue. The group met with the leadership of the Byurakan Observatory to discuss the creation of a special protected area on about 38 hectares.

According to the ministry, the parties intend to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation in the near future and begin the work on the creation of a specially protected area.

There are now 34 specially protected natural areas in Armenia, including national parks, reserves and hunting grounds. Their total area is 383 thousand hectares. -0-
