YEREVAN, July 31. /ARKA/. Nuclear security in Armenia has strengthened, experts at the International Atomic Energy Agency said after the agency's monitoring carried out at the invitation of the Armenian government and the Armenian State Committee for Nuclear Safety Regulation, as Hayastani Hanrapetutyun reports.
The aim of the monitoring was to see how has Armenia applied the IAEA's recommendations.
The experts saw progress in improvement of nuclear security infrastructures. They say Armenia has taken a number of important steps in this direction since 2015.
Ashot Martirosyan, head of the Armenian State Committee for Nuclear Safety Regulation, said that the IAEA has come up with some proposals for improvement of the regulator's infrastructure.
He said that according to a preliminary assessment, the country's nuclear security level is rated at 3.82 points on a four-point scale, and this is a quite high indicator.
Martirosyan said that the IAEA's final opinion will be released within the next three months.
The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is located some 30 kilometers west of Yerevan. Now only its second, 407.5-megawatt unit operates.
Armenia intends to build a new, 600-megawatt unit, which ensures 30 to 35 percent of the country's annual electric energy output. --0---
