Over 600 illegal garbage dumps eliminated in Armenia

Over 600 illegal garbage dumps have been eliminated in Armenia thanks to Clean Armenia program, the first deputy minister of territorial administration and development, Vache Terteryan said today.
YEREVAN, May 26. /ARKA/. Over 600 illegal garbage dumps have been eliminated in Armenia thanks to Clean Armenia program, the first deputy minister of territorial administration and development, Vache Terteryan said today.
Speaking about the Clean Armenia program at a May 25 Cabinet session, prime minister Karen Karapetyan noted that preparatory work has been carried out in anticipation of the national clean-up day on May 27. He said the government will be consistent, and the Clean Armenia program will continue.
He said also the government was considering the introduction of the institute of sanitary inspectors.
According to Clean Armenia, garbage dumps in Armenia occupy more than 430 hectares of land.
Terteryan said today that Clean Armenia has revealed more than 2,000 illegal garbage dumps across the country and about 600 of them have been either liquidated or relocated.
He also added that there will be landfills suitable for use in the next few years, until the problem is finally solved.
Terteryan reminded that a large landfill that meets environmental requirements is being built in central Kotayk province saying also that the disposal of garbage is not a one-day problem. The Clean Armenia is a large-scale program of measures. One is the national clean-up day, scheduled for May 27. -0-
