Pashinyan says all measures must be taken to ensure security of Syunik

YEREVAN, January 13. /ARKA/. A meeting chaired today by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan looked into the situation in the southern province of Syunik, which borders Azerbaijan and the measures taken to ensure its and its residents' security, the government press office reported.
Pashinyan was quoted as saying that "due to the well-known events, the border area of Syunik has undergone significant changes."
He emphasized the socio-economic and communication issues of the region and its environmental problems.
“I have had many occasions to say that Syunik is the backbone of our statehood, and we must take all measures there to ensure the security of Armenia. Syunik is of particular importance in this regard,' he said.
'It is also necessary to discuss what social and economic programs we will implement in the communities that received a new status, in fact, turned out to be border settlements,” Pashinyan said.
The prime minister was told about what kind of measures are being taken to resolve security issues on border roads and communities of Syunik, the placement of border checkpoints, the process of compensation for possible property damage to citizens and other related issues.
Also, possible solutions to existing problems, further actions to improve road and communication infrastructures were discussed.
After the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan signed a statement on the cessation of all hostilities in Artsakh on November 9, more than 190 settlements in Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent seven districts were placed under the control of Azerbaijan.
As a result, the borders of the Syunik region in the south of Armenia (including the administrative center Kapan) appeared to be in close proximity to the new borders of Azerbaijan, drawn during the Soviet time..-0-
