YEREVAN, January 21. /ARKA/. Poachers in Armenia have begun to fish in Lake Sevan at night, trying to avoid responsibility, Deputy Head of the Inspectorate for Nature Protection and Mineral Resources Vrezh Galoyan said on Tuesday.

"Poachers are improving their methods. In response, government agencies are introducing new technologies. We have strengthened control in the coastal zone. This has allowed us to detain poachers right on the shore - before they enter the lake," he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Galoyan noted that to combat poachers, the inspection body has begun to use modern technical means and capabilities, including drones and thermal imagers.

According to Galoyan, during the spawning period from November 15, 2024 to January 20, 2025, the regulator detected 11 cases of illegal fishing, confiscating some 2,784 kg of whitefish during the raids, up from 2,400 kg in 2023, and the total damage to nature amounted to about 12.8 million drams.
