President Serzh Sargsyan sent today a letter of condolences on passing of the  People’s Artist, unmatched performer of the Armenian folk songs Ophelia Hambardzumian.

YEREVAN, June 14. /ARKA/. President Serzh Sargsyan sent today a letter of condolences on passing of the  People’s Artist, unmatched performer of the Armenian folk songs Ophelia Hambardzumian.

“A great devotee and master of the folk singing art, the bearer and interpreter of our nation’s aspirations and emotional experiences, Ophelia Hambardzumian throughout her long and vivacious artistic life elevated the Armenian song to new heights. Her performances, which were popularly acclaimed for decades, were admired and became inspirational for the audiences here at home and gave strength and tenacity for staying Armenians for our compatriots in Spyurk. I express deep condolences to the family of the great performer, friends and thousands of her fans,” reads the letter of condolences of the President of Armenia.

Ophelia Hambardzumian  was born in Yerevan in 1925. From a young age, she was recognized for her beautiful voice. After graduating from a musical college in Yerevan  she became a solo-singer for the Ensemble of Folk Instruments of the Radio of Armenia.

Her repertoire included classical Armenian music and folk songs. She is especially recognized for her interpretations of  Sayat Nova’s songs. -0-
