Prices for stenting surgeries nearly halve in Armenia

Prices for stenting operations in Armenia have decreased by 45%, health minister Armen Muradyan said to a cabinet meeting today. According to him, the death rate from heart diseases is still quite high.
YEREVAN, September 8. /AKA/. Prices for stenting operations in Armenia have decreased by 45%, health minister Armen Muradyan said to a cabinet meeting today. According to him, the death rate from heart diseases is still quite high.
He explained that non-communicable diseases account for 90% of all deaths, of which exactly half are deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases.
In his words, Armenia has 11 centers now, two of which are in the regions, specialized in treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
He noted that the price of non-drug eluting stenting operation, financed partly by the government, has been cut from 1.1 million drams to 700 thousand drams and the price of drug-eluting stenting surgery has been reduced from 1.8 million drams to 1.1 million drams.
The minister noted that eight centers in Yerevan and one in the region, have already announced price cuts, which will enable to increase the number of patients by 30 monthly, as well as to reduce queues and the risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease.
The minister said they expect Armenian citizens traveling to neighboring countries, particularly, to Georgia, for stenting operations, as prices they are much more affordable, to choose now treatment at local clinics.
Armen Muradyan said also prices of some medications, particularly, "Plavix", prescribed to patients for a year after surgery on the coronary vessels, has been reduced form 10,000 drams to 4,200 drams.
The minister also noted that prices of most top-selling medicines in the first 9 months dropped by 6-7%. He added they are expected to fall further in December after the planned adoption of a new law on medications.-0-
