Prime minister vows ‘cardinal’ changes for healthcare system
YEREVAN, 13 January. /ARKA/. Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan promised today ‘cardinal’ changes in the national health system, saying the changes will apply to those patients who are eligible to government-funded health subsidies.

"Now, if a surgery is worth 240,000 drams, an eligible citizen pays 107,000 drams, almost half of the cost (co-financing). We see corruption risks here as clinics themselves set prices", Karapetyan said at his first news conference this year.

He said in order to avoid these risks, the government will pay the total cost of medical operations, which will become an additional burden on the budget worth 11 billion drams.

"As a result of certain measures the expenditures of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Health will reduce by 9 billion drams. There will remain a deficit of 2 billion drams",  said Karapetyan.

He predicted that in order to collect that additional 11 billion drams the government will have to increase some taxes, but in return corruption risks will be ruled out.

"It is necessary to eliminate all the conditions giving birth to corruption risks,"  said the prime minister. ($ 1 - 485.39 drams). -0-
