YEREVAN, February 13. /ARKA/. Over 25,000 ethnic Armenians, citizens of other countries, applied for Armenian citizenship in 2022, Hovhannes Aleksanyan, head of a department at the Office of Diaspora Commissioner, said at a press conference on Monday.

He added that it was the highest number since 1991. According to his data, about 40,000 ethnic Armenian from other countries were granted Armenian citizenship in 2018-2021.

He noted that repatriation is prompted by a number of factors and pointed out that in times of crisis all countries try to stimulate these processes.

"In recent years people from 40-45 countries have been applying for Armenian citizenship and a great number of them returns to Armenia for permanent residence. Of course, just obtaining citizenship is not enough, but it is a very important step," Aleksanyan said.

Aleksanyan noted that repatriates spend a lot of money in the country, open business. He also said that the number of appeals to the Office of the Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs on various issues is increasing. In 2022, for example, there were 10,000 applications. --0--
