YEREVAN, July 14. /ARKA/. Some $18.7 million will be spent over the next 8 years on planting new forests in Armenia, the Ministry of the Environment said today, adding that as a result their total area is expected to grow by 2.5%..

It said that Armenia, being an extremely vulnerable country to climate changes, is consistently working to expand forest areas, reduce the demand for firewood by at least 30%, introduce sustainable climate management skills and transfer relating technology to rural communities, the private sector and government agencies.

This work is being carried out through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Deforestation Program, the first large-scale project funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) in Europe and Central Asia.

Apart from the Armenian government, the program participants are the Austrian Development Agency, the autonomous province of Bolzano (Italy), the Armenian office of the World Wide Fund for Nature and the FAO. --0--
