Some 200,000 trout juveniles sent to Lake Sevan

Some 200,000 trout juveniles have been put into Lake Sevan as part of a program of free provision of baby fishes that is being run by the fish reserve restoration and fishery promotion foundation, the press office of Armenia's nature protection ministry reports.
YEREVAN, July 14. /ARKA/. Some 200,000 trout juveniles have been put into Lake Sevan as part of a program of free provision of baby fishes that is being run by the fish reserve restoration and fishery promotion foundation, the press office of Armenia's nature protection ministry reports.
According to the press release, 40,000 baby fishes which weighting up to 30 grams and 160,000 weighting from 3 to 5 grams were thrown into Karchakhpyur River that runs into the lake.
The ceremony was attended by Aramais Grigoryan, Armenia's nature protection minister, Sergo Karapetyan, the agriculture minister, Aram Gharibyan, the chief advisor to the Armenian president, Rafik Grigoryan, the Gegharkunik province governor and other officials.
«We are solving a major problem today,» Aramais Grigoryan is quoted in the ministry's press release. «We can't say that this measure gives a complete solution to the problem but we are moving in a right direction.»
In his words, some 370,000 trout juveniles are planned to be added to this number in November, and results will be visible in one or two years.
«It is necessary to enhance public awareness to lessen illegal fish hunting here in spawning season,» the minister said.
Sevan is one of the largest mountainous lakes in Europe and Asia. It sits in the middle of Armenian Highland at an altitude of 1914 meters.
The lake’s water surface is 1,500 square kilometers.
