Suicide rate in Armenia grows

Some 89 cases of suicides were reported to law-enforcement officials in Armenia in the first half of 2017, by five cases more than in the first half of 2016, Hovhannes Khangeldyan, the head of the National Center for Crisis Management of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, told journalists on Monday.
YEREVAN, July 24. /ARKA/. Some 89 cases of suicides were reported to law-enforcement officials in Armenia in the first half of 2017, by five cases more than in the first half of 2016, Hovhannes Khangeldyan, the head of the National Center for Crisis Management of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, told journalists on Monday.
According to him, during the same period, 203 suicide attempts were reported, down from 233 a year before. He said 65 people committed suicide by hanging themselves, 19 killed themselves by jumping from high-rise buildings and three people shot themselves.
He noted that this year three suicides were committed in public places. He added that the number of men taking such a step is three times more than that of women. -0-
