YEREVAN, May 12. /ARKA/. Thirteen residents of Sisian, a town in southern Armenian province of Syunik, were diagnosed on May 9-11 to have intestinal infection, and 5 of them were hospitalized, the press service of the Ministry of Health reported.

It said as part of epidemiological studies, specialists from the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention did house-to-house rounds to identify 199 more residents with symptoms characteristic of intestinal infections.

Most residents had similar complaints: vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and fever up to 38 degrees.

On May 12, another 14 more residents turned to the Sisian medical center with symptoms of intestinal infection, and house rounds revealed another 70 patients.

To date, 296 people with symptoms characteristic of intestinal infections have been registered in Sisian (281 cases among citizens under the age of 18, and 15 among adults).

Five patients continue receiving inpatient treatment at Sisian medical center, while the remaining patients with complaints receive outpatient treatment. The condition of all patients is assessed as moderate and mild with positive dynamics.

Water is considered to be  a probable cause of the outbreak. In the course of the epidemiological study, it turned out that the incidents had been preceded by an accident at the local water supply system. The ministry said work is now underway to fix the problem. Samples of drinking water and biological samples were taken from patients for bio analysis. -0-
