Reports that four people were killed and at least seven others were wounded in a shooting at a funeral home in the Yezidi-populated village of Shamiram in Armenia’s Aragatsotn province today morning have sent shock ways through the country.

YEREVAN, August 1. / ARKA /.  Reports that four people were killed and at least seven others were wounded in a shooting at a funeral home in the Yezidi-populated village of Shamiram in Armenia’s Aragatsotn province today morning have sent shock ways through the country.

According to police, an unknown person entered the funeral home opening fire on the crowd. Some reports indicated that the murder suspect is a middle-aged Yezidi man who had fired the shots after demanding money he had lent to his friends and relatives.

The ministry of health said four of the wounded people were transported to Armenia and Astghik medical centers in the capital Yerevan. The other three are being treated at a hospital in the provincial capital Ashtarak. Physicians assess their condition as stable and of moderate severity.  A resident of the village Nraz Naboyan, who witnessed the tragic event, said that the man that opened fire was about 40 years old.

"Every year on August 1 we gather to remember the deceased  There were about  500 people in the funeral home when suddenly an armed man came in and started shooting," Naboyan said.

According to him, two of the killed men had come to Armenia from Russia, the other two were residents of the village.

"After he fired at the first man, he shouted that everyone lie on the floor; he was furious and shouted about some debts, demanded that his money be returned, but he did not give names. He shot the first man deliberately, and then opened a random fire on the crowd. He used an automatic gun and acted alone,"said Naboyan, adding that he did not notice how the shooter managed to escape.

An official from the provincial administration said the police have identified the suspect and is undertaking all necessary measures to track him down. The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case in connection with the murder of two or more persons. -0--
