YEREVAN, June 17. /ARKA/. The first special Yerevan-Batumi-Yerevan “Armenia” train this summer departed from Yerevan railway station Saturday, with 114 passengers on board.
The South Caucasus Railway continues improving the service level and increasing comfort in trains, acting general manager of the company Sergey Valko said at the opening of the season.
This year the company managed to reduce the duration of Yerevan-Batumi journey with another half an hour, he said.
The ticket buying procedure has been considerably simplified: passengers can now obtain tickets not only at railway stations in Yerevan, Giumry, Vanadzor, Armavir and Stepanakert, but also online, Valko said. Time taken for ticket arrangements has been reduced from 10 to 2 minutes, he added.
Sleeping-car passengers of the special train will have free Wi-Fi Internet access and will be accompanied by a Georgian police squad in the territory of Georgia
Valko said Yerevan-Batumi-Yerevan passenger traffic has grown by six times over five years. Last year “Armenia” took some 50,000 people to the Black Sea.
Georgian ambassador to Armenia Tengiz Sharmanishvili said Yerevan-batumi-Yerevan rail trips not only serve economic purposes, but also strengthen Armenia-Georgia relationship and help develop personal contacts.
The seasonal Yerevan-Batumi-Yerevan journey is operated by the South Caucasus Railway company throughout the period from June 15 to October 1.
