YEREVAN, September 14. /ARKA/. The Yerevan Municipality will announce a new tender to buy buses for the capital, Mayor Hayk Marutyan told reporters on Monday.
In April 2020, the Municipality announced a tender for the purchase of 12 meter-long 100 buses. The deal was to be financed by the Yerevan community, but it was not completed. Instead the municipal administration announced in July a tender for purchase of 100 small buses.
"We announced a tender for the purchase of 100 minibuses. It attracted two participants - MAN and a Chinese company, but both did not meet the requirements. Therefore, the tender was invalidated. Now we are working on a new tender to start the process," Marutyan said.
In 2014 the Yerevan Municipality contracted a British transport consultancy, WYG to develop a detailed plan to change the Yerevan transport network. According to WYG, some 950 buses are needed for the normal functioning of public transport in Yerevan.
In 2019 the Municipality asked the government to raise more than $100 million to buy 820 modern buses. "Not everything depends on the mayor's office, the government should also participate very actively in the process, since without it the community is not able to independently allocate the funds we are talking about," Marutyan said.
The bulk of passengers in Yerevan are transported by minibuses belonging to private companies. According to Marutyan, nearly half of some 900 minibuses are too old and must be decommissioned. -0-
