Yerevan Municipality to launch innovative public transport ticketing project

YEREVAN, May 17. /ARKA/. The Yerevan Municipality will launch soon an innovative pilot public transport ticketing project as part of a broader public transport reform that will enable passengers to pay their fares by cards, QR codes and other technical devices, Hayk Sargsyan, head of a Municipality department in charge of public transport, told Armenpress.

He said the pilot project will be introduced in several routes to find out its advantages as well as disadvantages. The new public transport ticketing system will apply to passengers traveling in the city by buses, trolleybuses or the subway.

According to Hayk Sargsyan, for the final introduction of the single payment system the municipality will need to replace 80% of the bus fleet by the end of the year.

The Municipality has so far imported 100 small class and 211 medium class buses and all are in operation, except for the reserve buses.

With the introduction of the new route network the Municipality will start operating 12 meter –long buses. The contract has already been signed for 12 such buses that will soon arrive in Yerevan. The 12-meter buses will be traveling along wide streets and avenues. There are also plans to bring in 15 new trolleybuses, as well as 100 new middle-class buses. -0-
