YEREVAN, August 21. /ARKA/. Armenia’s capital Yerevan Armenia will celebrate its 2800th establishment anniversary without mayor, the local daily "Zhoghovurd" (People) writes in today’s issue.
It says the Central Election Commission (CEC) decided that elections to the Council of Elders, which is to elect mayor, are to be held on September 23. Under the law, if a party wins more than 50% of seats in the Council of Elders, the number one in its list of candidates becomes mayor.
However, the Council of Elders will not elect the mayor immediately because under article 17 of the Law on Local Self-Government in Yerevan, the first meeting of the newly elected Council of Elders after early elections is convened on the 10th day after the official announcement of the election results. The mayor is to be elected on the same day.
The daily says the CEC will some up the election results several days after September 23, if the results are not appealed by a political force or forces. In any case, this will happen after September 29-30, definitely after the planned celebration date. -0-
