YEREVAN, February 7. /ARKA/. Ahead of the 21st FIFA World Cup tournament to be held in Russia from June 14 to July 15, the FIFA World Cup trophy has arrived in the Armenian capital city Yerevan.
The FIFA World Cup trophy was presented to local fans by retired player of France’s national team Christian Karembeu, who noted that it was a great honor for him to present the Cup in Armenia. He expressed hope that the display of the Cup will contribute to the development of football here.
FIFA has been organizing the Cup display tours since 2006. This year the FIFA Cup will be on display in more than 50 countries. The FIFA Cup was first brought to Armenia in September 1999, when Armenia played versus then world champion France in the Euro 2000 qualifying tournament. It was brought by France’s team player Yuri Djorkaeff, who is of Armenian descent.
The World Cup is a gold trophy awarded to the winners of the FIFA World Cup association football tournament. Since the advent of the World Cup in 1930, two trophies have been used: the Jules Rimet Trophy from 1930 to 1970, and the FIFA World Cup Trophy from 1974 to the present day.
The first trophy, originally named Victory, but later renamed in honor of former FIFA president Jules Rimet, was made of gold plated Sterling silver and lapis lazuli and depicted Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Brazil won the trophy outright in 1970, prompting the commissioning of a replacement. The original Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen in 1983 and never recovered.
The subsequent trophy, called the "FIFA World Cup Trophy", was introduced in 1974. Made of 18 karat gold with a malachite base, it stands 36.8 centimeters high and weighs 6.1 kilograms. The trophy was made by Stabilimento Artistico Bertoni company in Italy. It depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. The current holder of the trophy is Germany, winner of the 2014 World Cup.-0-
