YEREVAN, September 25. /ARКА/. The most logical thing for Armenia to do would be to build a new Russian-designed power unit, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy Mikhail Chudakov told TASS on the sidelines of the World Atomic Week International Forum in Moscow.

"Armenia needs a nuclear power plant, and the most logical thing to do is to build a new Russian-designed unit to replace the existing one. This is absolutely logical. But we've seen that logic doesn't always work in recent years, and political decisions prevail," Chudakov said.

He cited the situation in Eastern Europe as an example. "They're installing units that are completely untested, drawn up on paper, and not based on reference standards. And there are no pilot projects. But they're being purchased just to avoid adopting a Russian design, which is tested, reliable, proven, and operating well," Chudakov noted.

About the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant

The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, approximately 30 km west of Yerevan. The plant is one of the country's main sources of electricity, providing up to 40% of its total generation. Its service life has been extended until 2026, and work is underway to extend it for another 10 years.

Construction of the new nuclear power plant is planned within 8-10 years. Various options are currently being compared and the experience of partners from Russia, the United States, and South Korea is being studied.-0-
