Armenia committed to peaceful use of nuclear energy

Safe use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes has been and remains a priority for Armenia, Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Minister Suren Papikyan said in his speech at the 63rd International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) session in Vienna.

YEREVAN, September 17. /ARKA/. Safe use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes has been and remains a priority for Armenia, Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Minister Suren Papikyan said in his speech at the 63rd International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) session in Vienna.

Papikyan also stressed the importance of further expansion and deepening of cooperation between Armenia and the IAEA, according to a ministry's press release. Papikyan said as a country with an operating nuclear power plant, Armenia has hosen a transparent and open policy for the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy and will continue to take and strengthen measures to increase the level of nuclear and radiation safety.

He noted that Armenia highly appreciates the role and assistance that the IAEA provides to Armenia in fulfilling its obligations to ensure safety criteria at the Armenian nuclear power plant.

"In the framework of cooperation with the IAEA, about 40 national programs have already been implemented, and seven more are in the process of implementation," the minister said.

Papikyan expressed hope that these programs will continue and maximum efforts will be made to maintain the Comprehensive Program of Joint Actions.

As part of his working visit, Papikyan met with the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Lee Yong. The minister noted the importance of UNIDO participation in the programs of proportional development of Armenia.

In turn, Lee Yong expressed his readiness to intensify participation in medium and long-term programs in Armenia, in particular, in such areas as  strengthening community skills, developing agriculture, infrastructures and others. At the meeting, an agreement was reached on a detailed discussion of joint programs in the near future. --0--
