YEREVAN, January 17. /ARKA/. Samvel Harutyunyan, the chairman of the State Committee on Science of the Ministry of Education and Science, said today that as a member country of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership Program Armenian scientists had been awarded 3 million euro worth grants by EU’s-run Horizon 2020 program
In 2016 October, Armenia’s National Assembly ratified an agreement signed on May 19, 2016 in Brussels whereby Armenia joined the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program. Armenia was awarded a 90-percent discount for membership fee and was to pay AMD 280 million for 2016. This is supposed to allow the country to take a full part in the program and scientists to obtain more grants.
Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation program ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment. The program promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.
Samvel Harutyunyan said today that the Armenian government increased funding for science by 0.8% for 2017 to pay the membership fee and ‘we hope that that money and even much more will return to Armenia as grants from Horizon 2020.” -0-
