Armenia will host the World Congress of Information Technology in 2019 (WCIT 2019), an event that may become a turning point for its IT industry, Karen Vardanyan, the chief executive officer of the of the Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE), said today.

YEREVAN, January 27. /ARKA/ Armenia will host the World Congress of Information Technology in 2019 (WCIT 2019), an event that may become a turning point for its IT industry, Karen Vardanyan, the chief executive officer of the of the Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE), said today.

The decision to hold WCIT 2019 in the capital of Armenia was adopted at WCIT-14, which was held in Mexico City on 29th of September – October 1.

Speaking at a news conference today, Vardanyan said  top IT managers form about 80 countries, including representatives of the leading IT companies, will attend the event which will allow Armenian IT companies to expand international cooperation.

It was reported earlier that the holding of the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) will cost the country $2.9 million. The application for hosting the congress in Yerevan was submitted by UITE.

According to Vardanyan, Armenia’s bourgeoning IT sector saw a 25% growth last year. About 500 IT companies account for the country’s 3.8% of GDP. 

The World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) is a consortium of associations from information and communications technology industries around the world. The group claims that it represents over 90 percent of the world IT market through its global membership, and has a goal of advancing the growth and development of the IT industry.

WITSA was founded in 1978 as the World Computing Services Industry Association, and participates in advocacy in international public policy that affects the “global information infrastructure.”-0-
