PSRC: Armenian Nuclear Power Plant will be halted for longer than usual repairs in 2026

YEREVAN, November 17. /ARKA/. In 2026, the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) will be brought to a five- month halt for maintenance, three months longer than usual for scheduled maintenance, Mesrop Mesropyan, Chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC), announced at a press briefing on Monday.

"It's clear that when a facility like an NPP, which is also a source of low-cost electricity generation, is temporarily out of operation, this will have a negative impact on next year's overall price. However, we have accumulated benefits in other areas and a financial cushion, which we will use to try to mitigate this impact," Mesropyan stated.

In this context, he noted that the PSRC staff, as usual by the end of the year, is already studying the possibility of reviewing electricity prices, taking into account all price components. Mesropyan assured that everything possible is being done to prevent price hikes.

The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, approximately 30 km west of Yerevan.

The plant is one of the country's main sources of electricity, providing up to 40% of its total output. Its service life has been extended until 2026, and work is underway to extend it for another 10 years. The new nuclear power plant is planned to be built within 8-10 years. Various options are currently being compared and the experience of partners from Russia, the United States, and South Korea is being studied.-0-
