Rosatom Completes Annual Work Plan at Armenian Nuclear Power Plant

YEREVAN, December 26. /ARКА/. The Russian state-owned atomic energy corporation Rosatom has successfully fulfilled its annual work plan for 2025 at Unit 2 of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), as reported by the press service of the corporation.

The press release states that the work was carried out by specialists from Rosatom Service JSC, which is part of Rosatom's Electric Power Division, in collaboration with Armenian NPP CJSC as part of the second life extension project for the unit.

In line with the framework contract's stipulations, Rosatom Service specialists accomplished a considerable amount of work focused on enhancing the plant's safety and reliability, while also verifying the unit's operational capability for its second extended life, according to TASS.

Additionally, the remaining lifespan of the NPP's non-replaceable and non-repairable equipment was evaluated. Experts have determined that this equipment can continue to be used until September 1, 2026.

Work has also commenced to establish a new configuration for the reactor's emergency core cooling system (ECCS) to broaden the range of design-basis accidents. Preparations have been finalized for the development of new classifications for the system components and equipment related to the NPP reactor unit.

The initial batch of test samples has been sent to a specialized research institute for testing the properties of the metal. Results are anticipated in November 2026. The information gathered from these tests will be crucial for evaluating the condition of the reactor vessel material and will support the justification for the future safe operation of the power unit.

The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, approximately 30 km west of Yerevan. The plant is one of the country's main sources of electricity, providing up to 40% of its total output. Its service life has been extended until 2026, and work is underway to extend it for another 10 years. The new nuclear power plant is planned to be built within 8-10 years. Various options are currently being compared and the experience of partners from Russia, the United States, and South Korea is being studied.-0-
